A Quick Look as to Why Perth Is Hotter Than Sydney
Perth is hotter than Sydney with an average high temperature of 25.2 °C. Meanwhile, Sydney has an average high temperature of 23.7 °C.
Why is this so? Here, we’ll discuss why The City of Lights is hotter than The Harbour City.
Why is Perth hotter than Sydney?
A big reason why Perth is hotter than Sydney is they’re in different climate zones.
Perth has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, while Sydney has a humid subtropical climate with mild summers and winters.
Most days in Perth are dry and have little chance of rainfall. Meanwhile, Sydney experiences high amounts of rainfall, especially during the winter season.
Here is a table comparing the average high and low temperatures of the two cities. This data is from the Bureau of Meteorology.
City | Average High Temperature (°C) | Average Low Temperature (°C) |
Perth | 25.2 | 13.6 |
Sydney | 23.7 | 15.7 |
As you can see, the average high temperature in Perth is almost 2°C hotter than Sydney. This can rise up to 4°C depending on the season, so it’s possible for us Perthites to experience even hotter days compared to our Sydneysider friends.
The number of sunny days is also an important factor to consider.
In fact, Perth is considered the sunniest city in Australia. Every year, my city experiences 147 sunny days and 121 partly sunny days.
We mostly have calm weather with clear skies and little chance of rainfall.
Given this, how come Perth has a lower average low temperature than Sydney (13.6°C vs 15.7°C)?
Perth can experience very low temperatures due to its location near the Indian Ocean. The cool sea breeze from the ocean blows towards the east, which cools down the city, especially during the winter season.
This phenomenon only occurs for a very limited time every year. So I still recommend that you pack some light clothes, even if you plan to visit Perth during its colder seasons.
And there you have it. Perth may be hotter than Sydney on most days of the year, but we enjoy calmer weather here.
The calmer weather has allowed most of us here to develop a very active, outdoor-loving community.
