Kings Park is a familiar haven to many, but there are a bunch of reasons why it’s a must-visit in Perth. It’s a botanical blockbuster, with 400 hectares of space and over 3,000 plant species just strutting their stuff.
Ever watched a hero survey their kingdom from a cliff? For us, that could be you at Kings Park.
Perched high by the Swan River, the park serves up epic views of the city, river, and Darling Range. We think the State War Memorial adds a touch of grandeur too.

For starters, we love that there are more than enough trees here to give you shade. The London Plane Trees, Moreton Bay Figs, Jacarandas, and Western Australian Red Flowering Gum just bring the park to life!
We reckon you’ll have more than just a stroll here—the park has a central lake with islands, numerous picnic spaces, playgrounds, a water playground, barbeques, public toilets, gazebos, and a stage area.

The park started as an indigenous camping spot and transformed into an old gasworks site. Now, we believe it’s a sweet spot for family fun.

Just a heads up that dogs aren’t allowed in the play spaces. Still, feel free to bring them on a leash around the edges or let them off-leash in the open fields.
Though if you need some solo time, Perth has plenty of doggy daycares to spoil your furry friend while you take a break.

Why’s it so cool, you ask? Well, we’re pretty stoked about the whole deal.

Despite its small size, we’re impressed that Totterdell Park offers a tranquil mix of grass, trees, and shrubbery, making it a wonderful escape for locals and office workers.
The playground steals the show for us with a soft fall play area and a robust metal play frame. This features slides, netting, ramps, monkey bars, and a climbing wall.
We think kids also have plenty of room to kick a footy on the grass, creating a great space for family outings or casual get-togethers.
Just one thing, though. We noticed that the playground doesn’t have those cool shade sails, but no worries! We’re glad that there are some big, mature trees around that save the day with their natural afternoon shade.
Also, some of these trees look big enough that you can throw down a picnic rug when a stroll in the sunny park becomes too hot to handle.
Pro tip:
Totterdell Park doesn’t have a fence and hangs out next to Thomas Street. So, if you’ve got children in tow, just keep a friendly watch to make sure these little explorers stick around.
Queens Gardens

We’re also impressed that this park has maintained its pristine charm since it opened in 1899! Imagine all these years, and it’s still looking picture-perfect.

Although known for its chill beach and trees, we like that the park has the basics covered too. Think drinking water, parking, and a restroom.

As an icing on the cake, this park also seems pretty safe. We noticed it’s well-lit even at 9 pm, so you can just stroll away to your heart’s content.

Need to get that heart pumping? Keep an eye out for cool cycling events, like the 10-kilometer ride that kicks off from Victoria Gardens in East Perth and wraps up at the QEII Medical Centre in Nedlands.
McCallum Park

McCallum Park is like the local events HQ in Perth! This park has a lovely backdrop by the Swan River, making it great for gatherings and happenings all year round.
With uncovered playgrounds and fitness equipment along the foreshore, the park offers loads of activities. It might not scream fancy, but with that awesome river view, we still think it’s a fantastic spot to explore.
Now, let’s talk amenities. Barbeques, picnic spots, and playgrounds are scattered throughout. The basic but clean toilets are also conveniently placed, ensuring your comfort.
You’ll discover clear walking and cycling paths too! We’re happy that these paths have separate sections to accommodate toddlers, making them family-friendly.
Just note that the rocky riverbank rules out any paddling or swimming adventures, but it offers a picturesque route for a nice walk to Heirisson Island.
Pro tip:
We recommend strolling at McCallum Park during cooler times, as shade here is somewhat limited. You may also want to bring your own water bottle and keep that hydration game strong.
Bardon Park

Bardon Park is basically Perth’s local hangout with a magnificent view. The park boasts wide pathways, picnic and BBQ facilities, bench seating, and stunning Swan River sights.
We think you might also appreciate that it has not one, but two playgrounds!
The upper playground is like a kid’s dream come true with a nest swing, a net bridge, and a flying fox for days of endless giggles. And down below, we like that you’ve got a more traditional setup for those classic play moments.

Take advantage of the park’s offerings, like the playground and scenic paths, for leisurely walks. If you’re feeling romantic, we reckon it can be a delightful date spot too.
Boasting both beauty and function, this park looks like a no-brainer option for major functions. We’re in awe that it even has four dedicated areas for these events!
