Pros

  • Wide range of eye services
  • Extensive experience
  • Friendly, professional, welcoming team

Cons

  • Requires referrals
  • Reception team can be unresponsive sometimes
  • Billing procedures may need to be clarified
  • Possible risks of consultation delays due to high demand

Dr. Dru Daniels holds his consultation office right across St. John of God Subiaco. He also has operating theatres in the same hospital as well as The Perth Eye Hospital and the Bentley Hospital.

He went to the University of Western Australia to obtain his medical and master’s degrees. Consequently, he took up his Fellowship in Glaucoma Specialist Training in the UK at the Bristol Eye Hospital.

Dr. Daniels offers a wide range of eye services and specialises in cataract surgery. He has since performed over 20,000 eye-related procedures.

We like that the reception team goes out of their way to be kind and polite to patients despite their hectic tasks. We also appreciate how Dr. Daniels patiently answered his patients’ questions during the consultation and before the procedure.

Patients need to note one crucial point. Appointments with Dr. Daniels need to be coursed through referrals from general practitioners, optometrists, and specialists.

We recommend that you make your appointments well ahead of time. Doing so can ensure you schedule the most convenient time for you.

We suggest ensuring that your consultation is limited to a maximum of one hour. This is to prevent your appointment from delaying other patients.

During your consultation, we recommend asking about payment schemes and procedures. This will help you eliminate surprises upon receiving your billing.

Pros

  • Wide scope of eye procedures available
  • Doctor has a great disposition
  • Takes time to answer questions

Cons

  • Reception team can be unavailable at times
  • Appointments can be hard to get

Dr. Nigel Morlet heads the New Vision Centre as a third-generation ophthalmologist in Western Australia. He has over two decades of experience operating on refractive laser eye surgery.

Currently specialising in corneal diseases and oculoplastic surgery, Dr. Morlet is widely regarded for his expertise. He published his studies on Excimer Laser Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Morlet has been awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons for Refractive Surgical Instrument Design.

He also taught actively in several universities such as Curtin University Department of Public Health and Western Australia School of Population Health.

Right from the start, it’s easy to tell that the staff is going to be honest and transparent. We appreciate this approach since this helps patients expect realistic results.

We also noted that the reception team is very informative and professional. Most patients do agree that despite their work, the reception team finds time to answer any enquiries.

However, you have to anticipate that the reception team can be unavailable at times. This is largely due to administrative tasks and enquiries, making the team difficult to contact occasionally.

We recommend double-checking your appointment on the day itself to avoid surprise delays or cancellations.

Pros

  • Accepts telephone and online appointment enquiries
  • Wide range of eye-related procedures
  • Professional, helpful, and informative team
  • Preferred providers of major private health funds

Cons

  • Delays and cancellations can happen from time to time
  • May need to confirm if procedure is covered by Medicare or private health funds

Dr. Ian Chan currently heads the Acculase Laser Eye Surgery. He completed his medical and surgery degrees from the University of Western Australia.

He obtained his dual fellowship training in cornea, cataract, and laser refractive surgery from Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has the distinction of being the first and only Perth surgeon to accomplish the latest SMILE laser eye surgery.

We appreciate the team at the clinic who have been commended for their professionalism and knowledgeability. We’re also impressed at how comfortable and cared for the patients are made to feel by Dr. Chan and his team.

Consultations can also be made online, which we like. Upon checking out the clinic, we noted that it was clean and modern.

Patients who have had procedures agree that their experiences were pain-free. We also appreciate that post-care questions are also found online and even answered in person.

We also like that they’re the preferred providers of major private health funds. We appreciate that they accept Zip Money as well.

While the overall experience is positive, we would like to note that there can be a few challenges with this clinic. Appointments can be prone to delays, even if the reception team tries its best to stay on schedule.

Another thing you will need to note is that cataract surgery may not be covered by Medicare. We suggest confirming this during your consultation.

Pros

  • Allows online enquiries and scheduling
  • Specialised eye-related procedures and services
  • Modern laser technology for cataract surgery
  • Knowledgeable, warm, and caring

Cons

  • Cataract surgery needs referrals
  • Costs can be subject to changes
  • May require covered additional visits for tests and scans

The WA Laser Eye Centre is headed by Dr. Robert Paul. Renowned for his experience and skill, he’s the medical director and the principal surgeon at the clinic.

Dr. Paul has trained extensively in ophthalmology and is a senior lecturer at the University of NSW and at the Curtin Medical School. He’s also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Western Australia’s School of Optometry.

Aside from these academic roles, Dr. Paul mentors in laser refractive surgery fellowship training. He also serves at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists as a federal councilor.

We immediately noticed that the reception team is very helpful, friendly, informative, and professional. The clinic itself is clean, modern, and provides a very calming atmosphere.

The clinic also accepts various modes of payment for gap fees.

Dr. Paul comes off as very knowledgeable, welcoming, and kind. We appreciate how he goes out of his way to explain the entire procedure from start to post-care.

We also like how he utilises modern laser technology in cataract surgery. This level of commitment to improving the lives of his patients is quite commendable.

You will have to note that cataract surgery will require a referral from your general practitioner or eye specialist. Additionally, costs can be subject to change.

Post-care recovery can include follow-up scans and tests, which will require more appointments. Make sure to confirm with Dr. Paul if there are additional costs for these appointments.

Based on this information, we suggest double-checking with the clinic regarding the cost of the procedure, including payment schemes.

Pros

  • Accepts online appointments
  • Reception team was friendly
  • Very specialised set of eye procedures
  • Knowledgeable, kind, and professional

Cons

  • Usually requires you to schedule ahead for appointments
  • Chances of appointment delays

Dr. Lourens Van Zyl is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and heads the Crystal Eye & Laser Centre.

He also holds several fellowships with the European Board of Ophthalmology, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.

Dr. Van Zyl has special interests in advanced vision correction surgery, including laser eye surgery and cataract surgery.

Following this specialisation, he obtained post-graduate fellowships in cataract and refractive surgery as well as advanced corneal and anterior segment surgery.

We find Dr. Van Zyl to be quite comfortable in helping his patients feel more at ease. His professional demeanour carries a confidence that calms down nervous patients.

Another thing we like is how informative Dr. Van Zyl and his team are. We also have to commend how they patiently explain the procedure from consultation to post-care.

We appreciate that the eye cataract surgery is basically quick and painless.  Patients can be quite apprehensive about the procedure, and the entire experience can cause anxiety in many.

One thing we would like to note is that appointments can fill up pretty quickly. You may have to schedule well in advance to secure an appointment.

Despite the appointments, be prepared to wait in case some schedules run late. We suggest calling on the day itself to confirm your appointment.
