Enjoy a morning coffee in the quiet backdrop of Karrakatta Cemetery
Address: Railway Rd, Karrakatta WA 6010, Australia
Opening hours: 5:00 AM – 6:00 PM (MON-SUN)
Start your day with a warm cup of joe and a calming walk in Karrakatta Cemetery. The cemetery has a few cafes close by where you can pick up your daily caffeine to go.
Opened in 1899, this cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Perth.
Explore a bit of Perth’s history as you stroll along the graves of some of the city’s prominent individuals. Karrakatta Cemetery is the final resting place of many writers, historians, and other famous personalities of the city.
The cemetery exudes an atmosphere of grace and tranquillity thanks to its impressive cypress trees. These trees offer good shade for visitors of the deceased.
Local’s Tip: You can check out the graves of some notable people interred in the cemetery including well-known actor Heath Ledger and John Curtin, the 14th prime minister of Australia. |
Check out the stunning artworks in the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery
Address: 35 Stirling Hwy, Crawley WA 6009, Australia
Opening hours: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM (TUES-SAT)
The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery is in the University of Western Australia and is host to a large collection of artworks and sculptures.
This art gallery was established to showcase the impressive collection of artworks the university has gathered for more than 90 years.
The collection features artworks made by Australian artists. It also features arts and artefacts from Aboriginal, Papua New Guinean, and Asian cultures.
Aside from its own art collection, the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery also features some prominent artworks from The Berndt Museum of Anthropology Collection and The Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art.
The art gallery also sometimes invites famous artists to discuss their craft. George Haynes was actually holding a talk in the art gallery during my last visit there.
Entrance is free, and everyone is encouraged by the University of Western Australia to come and visit their collections.
Local’s Tip: Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery’s parking is free on Saturdays. All of its exhibitions are free every day unless stated otherwise. |
Take the kids to a fun and exciting day at the Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space
Address: Esplanade, Dalkeith WA 6009, Australia
Opening hours: 7:00 AM – 8:30 PM (MON-SUN)
Jo Wheatley All Abilities Play Space is one of Nedlands’ most popular spots to visit for families. Its wide play area and exciting play equipment make it a hit, especially with the younger crowd.
Its main attraction is its huge playground which is host to different kinds of play equipment. Some of those pieces of equipment are not commonly found in other playgrounds.
Kids will be able to enjoy the play space’s sensory garden, climbing obstacles, slides, and more.
Adult companions can relax in the picnic area of the play space. The entire play space is covered with trees, which means the entire area is shaded.
The entire park is wheelchair-accessible, and all of its equipment can be used by children with disabilities.
Entrance is free, and the park is open to visitors every day from seven in the morning until eight in the evening. However, the play space closes earlier during the winter season with the park being open only until seven in the evening.
Local’s Tip: The park also has ping-pong tables and basketball courts at which adults can play. |
Compete in a friendly match of beach volleyball in Sand Sports Australia

Fancy a game of beach volleyball? How about trying out a game of netball?
Then come down to Nedlands’ popular sports venue, Sand Sports Australia! It’s host to the largest beach volleyball competitions in Western Australia.
It also has many cafes and restaurants nearby, so players and visitors can have a great meal after a game.
Netball is a great game to try out, especially if you haven’t tried any beach games yet. It costs $30 per hour to rent a court, so make sure to bring a big group of friends to make the most of the money spent.
Local’s Tip: Bringing in foods and beverages is allowed in Sand Sports Australia. You can hang out for hours with your friends watching games while enjoying snacks and beers. |
Pay respects to the martyrs of war at the Perth War Cemetery and Annex
Address: Smyth Rd, Nedlands, Western Australia, 6009 Australia
Opening hours: 5:00 AM – 6:00 PM (MON-SUN)
Take a stroll at the Perth War Cemetery and Annex, and pay respects to the soldiers who gave their lives for Australia and its citizens.
The cemetery is located right beside the Karrakatta Cemetery. This cemetery was built back in 1942 by the Australian Army for soldiers who succumbed to their wounds in the nearby Hollywood Military Hospital.
Some of the servicemen buried there are Australia’s most famous soldiers. One of those is Squadron Leader Keith W. Truscott, a famed World War II ace pilot who participated in the defence of the United Kingdom during the Blitz.
There are other notable servicemen in the cemetery who each have their own stories of valour and bravery.
I hope that your visit to the Perth War Cemetery and Annex will be a memorable one as you learn more about the stories of each of these soldiers.
Local’s Tip: The tombstones show a short description of which unit the soldiers buried there have served. You can use this to make the search for information about their lives a bit easier. |
Come see the latest blockbuster and arthouse films at the Windsor Cinema – Luna Palace Cinemas
Address: 98 Stirling Hwy, Nedlands WA 6009, Australia
Opening hours: See website for showtime schedules
Conclude your visit to Nedlands by checking out the latest films at the Windsor Cinema. Located beside the Stirling Highway, this cinema is one of the most popular places to visit in the city.
A unique thing about Windsor Cinema is that it doesn’t limit its viewers to blockbuster films. I’m always in for a surprise whenever I visit this cinema because they feature films I haven’t heard about.
The mix of blockbuster and arthouse films makes Windsor Cinema attractive to both cinephiles and mainstream audiences. The beautiful art deco architecture also makes it a popular cinema for hosting film festivals like the French Film Festival.
The interior of the cinema is also largely untouched and most of its amenities are older compared to newer cinemas. The amenities are maintained regularly, but the cinema doesn’t have the latest comforts introduced by newer cinemas in the city.
Despite this, most viewers are still happy to enjoy their films at the Windsor Cinema simply because of the atmosphere it provides to its guests.
Local’s Tip: Get their membership plan if you love films. Members can score cheaper ticket prices and can get special tickets for film festivals and other special events. |
