Top 5 Driving Instructors in Perth

Top 6 Driving Instructors in Perth

How We Picked the Top-Rated Driving Instructors in Perth

Experience

You must be safe while learning how to drive on the road. Thus, we only chose driving instructors in Perth who have the proper experience and qualifications.

Approach

Driving can be intimidating, especially once you’re on a test drive. We chose Perth driving instructors who will effectively help you learn to drive without being too harsh.

Transmission Options

Your car may come with an automatic or manual transmission. You may also choose to learn how to drive both, so we made sure to choose instructors that could teach both.

Cost

Perth driving instructors may not come cheap, but it’s paramount that they’re worth the money you’re paying them for.

Pros

  • Patient instructors
  • Instructors help you gain confidence
  • Has 2 transmission options
  • Offers discounts for university students

Cons

  • Some late instructors
  • No card payments

What impressed us most about Western Suburbs Driving School is how their lessons are open to all ages who are allowed to drive on the road.

Not only do they offer discounts for university students on weekdays, but they also happily accommodate older learners age 60 and above, whether it’s for a licence renewal or a first-time driver!

We also appreciate their affordable price points, which start at $65 for a 45-minute lesson, with lesson packages available with five or ten lessons.

If there’s one gripe we have about their prices, however, it’s the fact that you can only pay by cheque, cash, or bank transfer. So if your preferred method is through credit card, be sure to have a backup available.

However, we don’t think this is too much of an inconvenience, and the quality of service they offer makes the extra hassle worth it.

First, most of their clients have attested to the fact that their instructors have been kind, patient, and accommodating. This is especially helpful for first-time learners who are jittery or still regaining confidence.

The only disadvantage is that some instructors showed up late to lessons, although this seemed to be limited to a few instructors who no longer work for the business.

We can’t attest to the passing rate of their students, but even those who failed have been satisfied with the quality of their lessons. These clients reported that their instructors were helpful in establishing their confidence to pass their next exams.

2. Defensive Driving School

Pros

  • Some patient instructors
  • Detailed lessons
  • Can pick you up for your driving lesson
  • Has discount packages

Cons

  • Some clients complained of racist instructors
  • Some reports of demoralising instructors

As their name suggests, Defensive Driving School aims to teach you defensive driving skills, not offensive, which is good on our books.

They’re also a great pick among those who are looking for convenience, as they also offer pickup and drop-off as one of their services for their lessons.

They teach both transmissions, although manual driving lessons cost a bit more than automatic. The good news is that the premium isn’t much, at only a $5 difference!

They also offer discount packages if you’re getting at least five lessons, priced at $300 for automatic transmission lessons and $325 for manual transmission. The lesson and test package, meanwhile, is priced at $170.

We also like how they offer advanced driving courses for a) cities and freeways and b) countrysides. These are priced differently at $140 for two hours and $330 for three hours, respectively.

If there’s a particular area of concern, it’s regarding some of their instructors. Some clients have claimed that they experience racism during their lessons, with the instructor blaming their ethnicity for their driving skills.

Besides this, some have found their instructors to be demoralising and didn’t offer constructive feedback for them to improve.

However, the reason we’ve kept them on the list is that these were complaints limited to two specific instructors. Thus, we encourage you to ask for recommendations or request specific instructors to get the best service.

Pros

  • Multiple locations around WA
  • Pickup and drop-off service
  • Explains thoroughly in lessons
  • Good range of lessons

Cons

  • Minor reports of rude customer service
  • No lesson packages

Driving School WA stays true to its name by serving most Perth suburbs, and the best of all is that they come to you! This way, you wouldn’t have to worry about going to and from their office.

They don’t have a main office but instead focus on their personalised pickup services. However, they do offer assistance when it comes to scheduling your PDA with licensing centres all around WA.

Another bonus is that they have their own YouTube channel for first-time learners, and their videos address beginner drivers’ enquiries.

We also find their rates to be reasonable, starting at $70 for a one-hour lesson, $130 for two hours, and $100 for 100 minutes. Not only that, you can book their services 24/7 online.

However, you have to pay for their lessons individually, as they do not offer lesson packages for extra savings.

They have a booklet that’s free to download on their website, which has everything you need to know about the driving rules and regulations in Western Australia, including protocol in case of emergencies or car breakage.

This has been very helpful to their clients, especially first-time drivers or foreign drivers planning to get a licence in WA.

In fact, a lot of foreign drivers highly recommended their services, as their instructors were very understanding about their lack of confidence when speaking English.

The one complaint regarding their service was not regarding their instructors, but instead their customer service staff who were rude on the phone.

Pros

  • High pass rate
  • Offers discounts to university students
  • Has pickup and drop-off service
  • Has moped and motorbike lessons

Cons

  • Has a surcharge for PayPal or credit card payments
  • Strict rescheduling policies
  • No lesson packages

Driving lessons tend to be exclusive for those driving cars, but Apex Driving School offers moped and motorbike driving lessons for those who need it.

The prices differ depending on the type of vehicle you want to drive, but their rates start at $65 for 45 minutes and are the same for university students for a one-hour lesson.

They also have gift vouchers available for those who are looking to gift their children or family members driving lessons.

Unfortunately, they don’t offer lesson packages, which means you’ll have to pay for their lessons at an individual price. Furthermore, they also offer a surcharge for payments done through PayPal or credit card.

However, considering their cheap rates, we don’t think this is too much, especially if it’s your preferred method of payment.

Other than the range of their driving lessons, we were most impressed by their high pass rate of 95%. However, it’s worth noting that these were their self-published rates and could not be confirmed externally.

As for their instructors, most clients were pleased with their instructions and stated that they were helpful in boosting their confidence for their driving exam.

There were hardly any complaints regarding their instructors, but there were regarding their rescheduling policy.

If you need to reschedule, be sure to do it with more than eight hours’ notice, as requests to reschedule any sooner may not be entertained.

Pros

  • Affordable lessons
  • Offers lessons conducted at night
  • Patient and helpful instructors
  • Has lesson packages

Cons

  • Some complaints of additional and hidden costs
  • Some complaints of impatient instructors

If you’re looking for a driving school that offers lessons at night, Brilliant Driving School is your best option. This is especially helpful for those who only have time for lessons at night or have hesitations about nighttime driving.

It’s also great that they offer affordable lessons, starting at $60 for an hour’s lesson for either manual or automatic transmission lessons. They also offer lesson packages for five or ten lessons, with rates at $285 and $550, respectively.

However, we do encourage you to be clear and thorough regarding the full breakdown of your costs once you pay, as multiple clients have complained of hidden costs in their bills.

You also have to know that a 60% initial payment is required for lesson packages, although it isn’t required for individual classes.

Clients have reported most of their instructors to be helpful and patient, which was crucial in helping them pass their exams and get their licences.

However, we did hear some complaints about instructors losing their patience and snapping at the students, which was detrimental to the students’ learning and confidence.

If you’re on a tight budget, they might be a good pick, but just be sure to request a full breakdown of costs to avoid additional fees.

All lessons are conducted in modern dual-controlled vehicles, ensuring the safety and comfort of both the student and instructor.

These vehicles are equipped with additional controls, allowing instructors to intervene if necessary, which is especially reassuring for nervous or inexperienced drivers. This is what we like about their lessons.
