Get back in the game fast with the best sports doctors and clinics in Perth!

  • Experience: We didn’t include candidates with less than 5 years of hands-on experience in treating sports-related injuries or conditions. That said, doctors with over two decades were favoured. Portfolios, testimonials, interviews, and case histories determined the score.
  • Communication Skills: Clear guidance on aspects such as timeline, recovery plans, and injury prevention was validated. Bedside manners and patient support were greatly considered as well. To come up with a score, we used legitimate feedback, interviews, forums, and medical blogs.
  • Up-to-Date: The team prioritised clinics and doctors with high-tech essentials, mainly MRIs and ultrasound machines. Up-to-date treatment protocols were also rated based on professional memberships and case studies.
  • Credentials: Only practitioners registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA) landed a spot. Of course, we accounted for relevant certifications or awards in sports medicine, orthopaedics, and physiotherapy. Affiliations with sports clubs or players also mattered. Documentation and online verification confirmed such details.
  • Pricing: Treatment costs across multiple Perth clinics and specialists were compared. Transparency, package options, and proximity to the city’s averages influenced the final mark.

Being an athlete is like running a marathon while juggling. My footy-playing nephew, for example, pushes through punishing reps and even tougher pressure daily.

It’s challenging both mentally and physically. He has already been sidelined twice thanks to sprains, which is tough when your body is your career.

Fortunately, Perth is home to seasoned sports doctors. One of them worked his magic on our little Gary Ablett Sr., and he’s back on track now!

If you need his name and more, read our rundown of the city’s most successful specialists!

A significant reason for choosing Dr. Gary Couanis, former team doctor for various Perth sports clubs, was his extensive experience. This specialist has been providing advanced sports medicine since 2009.

The team also considered his personal background, having competed in swimming, marathons, triathlons, and even the Ironman World Championships! That’s a strong indication he understands the physical and mental challenges of sports firsthand.

His evaluations are also highly detailed. In my nephew’s case, current issues were identified along with other potential risks.

Most importantly, his advice is evidence-based, practical, and personalised, and we’re not the only ones to say this. Better yet, Dr. Couanis often leans on treatments that avoid unnecessary or expensive surgeries.

Unsurprisingly, you might need to wait to see him because of high demand and his clinic’s closure on Sundays. Perth Sports Medicine’s booking system is honestly smooth, but choosing a specific doctor, especially an experienced one, can affect this.

Pros

  • Practising since 2009
  • Wide-ranging sports affiliations
  • Avoids unneeded or costly surgeries
  • Detailed appointments
  • Comprehensive specialities

Cons

  • Weekend unavailability
  • High demand

Very Satisfied

I engaged with Dr Couanis prior to running the 1000km Bibbulmun Track and was very satisfied with the assessments he had me complete prior and post the journey. He also gave me some great advice which assisted with my recovery time on the track and recovery post the adventure. I highly recommend not just to athletes but for those looking for a high level of care and professional advice about a number of pathways they can take to rehabilitate or prevent.

I Got Better

Dr Jenkin treated my running related ankle injury with simple sound advice. I got better and was running really well within 8 weeks. I was very relieved not to require surgery or expensive orthotics! Would recommend him to anyone!

Joondalup Sports Medicine offers a variety of services under one roof.

Their team, composed of sports medicine and sports science practitioners, is seasoned and led by Dr. Chris Barr, who has been in practice for 20-plus years. He has even served as the official doctor of teams and tourneys.

The sweet part is that most patients describe the clinic’s specialists as personable. Complex diagnoses are said to be explained in simpler terms, too.

Another convenient perk is the referral system. It generally speeds up diagnosis and ensures continuity of care, as it’s the clinic that organises everything.

Availability isn’t always guaranteed, though. For one, you can’t swing by on Saturdays and Sundays or during public holidays.

We’ve also heard a few grumbles about an unfriendly receptionist, which dents their communication score.

On a positive note, most patients we chatted with didn’t undergo surgeries and got better within two months!

Pros

  • Led by a doctor who’s been practising for over two decades
  • Convenient referral system
  • Focuses on non-surgical options first
  • Wide-ranging sports affiliations

Cons

  • Saturday–Sunday closure
  • Complaints about the receptionist’s attitude

Very Happy with the Experience

Had a consult today with Dr Chris Barr in his capacity as a sports physician. I was very happy with the experience and the outcome. Chris has a masters in physiotherapy, a medical degree and is a GP. His involvement in sports as a team doctor gives him valuable and wide experience dealing with sports injuries I found him personable and a good listener. After a thorough assessment, he used has training in ultra sound imaging to accurately administer an injection into a troublesome joint. I really appreciated a one stop resolution of the problem. Highly recommended.

A Good Experience

I have been off work for 7 months now due to injury. I was referred to Dr Chris Barr by my shoulder surgeon for assessment and rehab strategy so that I can return to work. The moment I walked in, Maria the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. When it was time for my appointment Dr Chris was very interested and attentive to what I was telling him about my job. Chris assessed me and understood the need for my return to work and gave me a plan to work to. I found the plan achievable and was told to work in conjunction with my physio. I live in the country and my physio is close to home. All in all, a good experience.

We couldn’t overlook Dr. Duncan Sullivan’s track record. For starters, he brings over 30 years of experience.

The scope of his expertise also makes him one of the most well-rounded doctors here, if not the most. Dr. Sullivan has 5-plus specialties and even combines traditional and modern approaches, such as guided injection therapies and exercise-based rehabilitation.

Endurance sports are where he’s most focused. That puts him right up there for anyone looking to improve their foot mechanics or heal exercise-induced leg pains.

Similar to our previous entries, however, you can’t always count on availability, since he’s sought after and not around on weekends.

In addition, the Glengarry clinic itself has drawn criticism for not always running on time, regardless of patient punctuality.

The upside is that he practises at various locations, including the two clinics mentioned above and Perth Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre.

Pros

  • 30 years of experience
  • Focuses on non-invasive methods
  • Wide range of expertise
  • Practices at multiple clinics

Cons

  • Weekend unavailability
  • The Glengarry clinic doesn’t always run on time

Happy with the Care

I saw Dr Duncan Sullivan for increasing pain in my wrist as a result of often carrying my fussy baby. Dr Sullivan was able to quickly diagnose the problem and treat it right away. 24 hours later and the injection was so effective, I really do not know why I didn’t do it sooner. I will soon return to get the other hand treated.

Dr Sullivan was very accommodating in fitting me in for a last minute appointment prior to going on leave. I am very happy with the care I received and would happily recommend him to others.

Diagnosis Was Spot-On

My Husband has been seeing Dr Duncan Sullivan regularly for the past six months after suffering a major shoulder injury. Dr Sullivan’s diagnosis was spot on and his treatment and care has been excellent. His ongoing expert assistance has made all the difference getting him back to work. We would highly recommend Dr Sullivan.

WA Sports Med tops the list when it comes to breadth of services. Beyond their comprehensive general physiotherapy treatments, patients can swing by for things such as conditioning classes and strength assessments.

The centre’s prestige deserves a mention, too, knowing it’s favoured by numerous Perth  AFL, netball, rowing, and basketball clubs. Plus, it’s the only place mentioned here that’s kitted with state-of-the-art cardio machines and lifting platforms.

There’s hardly any wait, either, since the WA Sports Med crew offers over 10 experts who work with professional and semi-professional teams/athletes.

Even better, you have the option to go with specialised programs, namely dry needling, remedial massages, women’s health physiotherapy, and chronic pain management.

Best to plan your budget smartly, though. Prices here, given their connection with pro teams and advanced gear, can sting, especially next to those of smaller clinics.

In relation to that, the facilities and programs might not suit those with minor issues.

Pros

  • Operating for 6+ years
  • Breadth of physiotherapy and allied treatments
  • Massive team
  • Integrated rehab and strength options
  • Strong reputation with elite sports teams and pros

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Not suited for those with minor issues

Friendly and Welcoming

I have torn my ACL and meniscus earlier this year and had a lot of complications pre surgery. Leon Vogel and his team went beyond and above to not just physically but also mentally get me ready for surgery. I’ve been seeing him for nearly a year now ( pre- and post-surgery ) and I cannot recommend him and his team highly enough. He is motivating me to achieve more and pushes my boundaries every time. The facilities are fantastic, and everyone is friendly and welcoming!

Caring and Knowledgeable

Adrian is the best medical professional and physio I’ve ever seen. So caring and knowledgeable. Could not recommend enough.

If you’re looking for a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Meyerkoft is one of Perth’s best. Receiving training at the prestigious Fortius Clinic in London is a solid marker of his expertise.

Service-wise, most patients book him for knee and ankle surgeries. His procedures incorporate MAKO and ROSA, cutting-edge robotic systems renowned for reduced pain, improved precision, faster recovery times, personalised treatments, and more.

As expected, that can take a chunk out of your savings, and Dr. Meyerkort’s specialties might not be relevant if you do not require surgeries at all.

He’s also the youngest doctor featured in this review, starting out in 2019. While six-plus years of experience is no joke, it’s relatively shorter than what our other candidates have.

The silver lining is that he’s generally seen as pleasant and informative. Most importantly, he has successfully treated complicated injuries such as torn ACLs and meniscus.

Pros

  • Advanced robotic surgery options
  • International fellowship experience
  • Broad orthopaedic expertise
  • Positive track record with complicated cases

Cons

  • Can be pricey
  • Relatively young in terms of experience

Exceptionally Helpful

Dr Meyerkort has been amazing through my journey with my troublesome ankle. He has operated twice over the past five years due to an osteochondral lesion of the talus. His care and bedside manner are amazing and follow up care is exceptionally helpful as well.

Explained Things Clearly

Clear explanations and highest level of care

A big thanks to Dr Daniel Meyerkort who performed my ACL Reconstruction. Explained things clearly and treated me with highest level of care and respect any patient could hope for. Aside from the above I would also like to say Daniel’s office staff were kind and wonderful towards me as well. Highly recommend.
