Pros
- One-year warranty
- Competitive prices
- Sources its parts from reputable companies
- Knowledgeable and friendly mechanics
Cons
- Slow response rate
- Underdeveloped website
West Engines is the perfect choice if you’re very critical of the parts being used to rebuild your engine. This company sources its spare parts from reputable companies in Japan and the USA.
For example, the gaskets they use for their Japanese engines come from K.P. Gasket Co., which is based in Japan.
They also only use either brass or stainless steel for their engine rebuilding services to avoid engine corrosion or rusting.
My friend checked out West Engines a couple of months ago to have the engine of his Toyota Hilux serviced. One thing he immediately noticed about this shop was its knowledgeable and friendly mechanics.
His mechanic, Shane, gave him a couple of tips on what aftermarket parts he should get to maximise his engine’s potential. My friend took his advice to heart and was very happy that Shane’s advice absolutely worked.
He was also pleased by the fact that they have a one-year warranty on all their parts and services.
Another thing my friend loved about this company was its competitive prices. He canvassed many shops before settling with West Engines, and he concluded that their service rates are among the lowest in Perth.
However, one thing he didn’t like about them was their slow response rate. He had to call them three times before someone was able to answer the phone.
I also have a minor complaint about their website. It looks underdeveloped and lacks many features and details, like price listings.

Pros
- Can deliver engines nationwide
- More than 40 years of experience
- Huge selection of cylinder heads
- Uses advanced equipment for its services
Cons
- Cases of unprofessional customer service
- No details on warranties for services and products
Head Exchange is great if you’re looking to buy a rebuilt engine even though you’re far away from Perth. Their delivery services are available nationwide, so you can order a high-performance engine from the comfort of your home.
It won’t be hard to find what you need from them because they offer a wide range of engine parts, especially cylinder heads. They have 600 cylinder heads in stock, which is quite impressive.
Their more than 40 years of experience are a huge reason why you can trust these guys with engine rebuilding. Head Exchange has been in the industry since 1981.
They also rely on advanced equipment to carry out their services. An example of this is their UltraSonic engine cleaner, which uses high-intensity sound waves to remove dirt and debris.
However, Head Exchange still has some room for improvement. Their staff had received complaints from some customers for their unprofessional attitude.
It’s also a slight concern for me that they don’t have a clear warranty policy on their website. You’ll need to ask for specifics over the phone or by email.

Pros
- Competitive prices
- Fast services
- Highly skilled with various engines
- Honest and professional mechanics
Cons
- Underdeveloped website
- Location too far from towns south of Perth CBD
West Coast Cylinder Heads is an engine rebuilding shop I particularly like due to its proficiency with a vast number of engines. They can handle the latest designs today as well as older ones like Nissan’s SR20DET and General Motors’ L98.
This small family-owned shop has a team of honest and professional mechanics. The owner, Dave, was an awesome dude to interact with, and he did an excellent job improving my Suzuki APV’s engine.
He was upfront about every part and procedure he’d need to work on my car’s engine. What I really appreciate is his ability to discern whether a part is still in good condition.
As a result, I paid significantly less for my engine because he only charged me for parts that were in absolute need of replacing.
I honestly think that even if he advised me to replace every part with a new one, I would have still saved some money. Their services are some of the most affordable I’ve seen here in Perth.
Another awesome thing I can praise about West Coast Cylinder Heads is its fast service. The engine rebuilding they’ve done on my APV only took them a day, which was a complete surprise for me.
I legitimately thought that I’d have to wait at least three days before I could drive my car again.
However, it’s quite disappointing that their shop can be hard to reach for some people. Their shop is located in Wangara, which is too far for many residents living south of the Perth CBD.
Another concern for me (a minor one, though) is their underdeveloped website. It lacks some very helpful features, like an enquiry form.

Pros
- 20 years of experience
- Offers dynamometer services
- Can work on engines made in the 1950s
- Has experience working on drag racing cars
Cons
- Limited business hours on weekends
- Location too far from towns south of Perth CBD
Outlaw Performance and Automotive is a great choice for car enthusiasts and professional racers. Their highly skilled mechanics are capable of rebuilding engines made as far back as the 1950s!
The owner, Brian Robinson, is an expert mechanic who is proficient in working with performance cars. He and his team have 20 years of experience working on Australian and American car brands.
A huge proof of the skill of this company in rebuilding engines is their active participation in Australia’s drag racing scene. Outlaw Performance and Automotive has broken some records in the Australian National Drag Racing Association.
One of their proudest moments is their 312 kph speed record in ANDRA’s Blown Sedan category.
As someone who sometimes watches drag races, I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for their next participation in ANDRA’s races.
Another reason why I consider them one of the best in Perth is thanks to their unique dynamometer service. Their SuperFlow Engine Dyno tool can get accurate readings on your engine’s horsepower and torque.
Having an accurate tool like that allows them to be more precise when it comes to rebuilding and improving your engine.
However, I should warn you that their shop is located in Malaga, which is too far for residents of towns south of the Perth CBD.
I also recommend that you free up a day between Monday and Friday because they have limited business hours on weekends.

Pros
- More than 35 years of experience
- Can work on vintage car engines
- Sources parts from reputable manufacturers
- Competitive prices
Cons
- Too far from Perth CBD
- Website isn’t updated regularly
WA Motor Mechanics is a reliable partner for those who own and operate vintage cars. Their professional mechanics can work on engines that were made before I was even born.
WA Motors Mechanics is a family-owned business that was established in 1983 by Lee and Sue Harding.
Their son, Dan Harding, is now the one who manages the company.
I visited their shop in Wangara one time when I was canvassing for an engine shop that could work on my APV’s engine.
Dan was very welcoming during my visit, and he was more than happy to answer all of my questions. One thing that really caught my eye about WA Motor Mechanics is its commitment to only source its parts from reputable manufacturers.
He told me that all their parts come from companies like Isuzu, Nissan, Scania, and more.
This is great, especially for those who only want genuine parts for their engines.
Another thing I love about WA Motor Mechanics is its customer-friendly prices. Their services are priced reasonably, and I consider them affordable enough for most people.
However, I went with another company for a reason I’ll explain below.
Their shop is too far away for me to visit easily. It’s located at the northernmost edge of Wangara, which is too far from the Perth CBD.
I wanted a shop that was a bit closer to me so I could come back easily should my engine have some defects or issues.
I also have an issue with their inability to update their website regularly. Some engine parts they sell aren’t listed on their website, and you’ll need to contact them directly for more information.
