Sushi Gin’s traditional fare is a must on our Murray Street Mall trips, and nothing quite compares to their teriyaki chicken bento. We love its sweet and savory essence, packed with everything from nimono (stewed greens) to melt-in-your-mouth chicken.

To top it off, the dish comes with pork gyoza, adding bolder and meatier flavors. What seals this one for us, though, is the addition of miso soup, an umami-rich dish that makes this $28 a well-rounded and belly-filling choice.

When the team craves a communal vibe, Furaibo is the spot we flock to. The izakaya setup practically begs for us to order shareable plates, with yakitori, and sashimi as the picks we typically go for.

The yakitori here turned us into patrons with its no-fuss flavor—just light salt and a savory sauce that’s not too bold. As for sashimi, the bluefin tuna version is our go-to; we’re huge fans of its punctuated creaminess and sweetness.

Santini always makes us reconsider our budget, but on paydays, it’s a must-visit. Their wood-grilled octopus is a hit among our teammates, with flavors we’d describe as garlicky, zesty, smoky, and fiery.

Last time we swung by, though, we were feeling extra and went with the rib-eye. Its natural sweetness and earthy flavors stood out, complemented perfectly by the luscious caramelized notes from the black garlic butter that almost had us licking the plate.

Website

Hifumiya’s bowls always bring comfort to our tummies and delight our palates, while its intimate “dine on the counter” setup creates an authentically Japanese atmosphere.

For food, we always go for their much-loved beef curry udon, a dish we enjoy for its thick, chewy udon noodles and silky-smooth beef soaking in an aromatic curry broth. This bowl’s $15 price helps with its appeal, too.

Fyrai Kitchen’s fried rice dishes could be the secret behind why foodies swarm to Perth. Seriously, their selection is authentically Asian, so you can forget about those bland instant rice bowls from convenience stores.

If you think we’re fooling around, try their number 1 bowl with spicy sambal belacan (shrimp paste), barbecued pork, and crunchy dried shrimp. We savored it on our most recent visit, and the balance of heat and umami is pure chef’s kiss.

Uniqlo’s no-fuss, wallet-friendly attire is a win-win for our fashion-forward team. And when you combine that with their cutting-edge designs, it’s easy to see why we’re always digging through their shelves.

Specifically, we’re huge stans of their HEATTECH collection—thermal wear for braving cold snaps without looking too excessive. Still, it’s the UT graphic tees that sell fast, probably because their pop culture and art-inspired designs scream street cred.

A trip to Murray Street Mall isn’t truly complete without snagging a pair of iconic Vans. Their casual designs, especially the checkerboard ones, are a favorite among our teammates who want to relive their skating and punk pop days.

On top of that, they have tough and lightweight options like the MTE Crosspath, which we just picked up last month. This pair is built for our escapades and can handle any terrain or activity without ever feeling like steel boots.

When we’re stumped on what to get, Myer is where we head, as it has everything, from suits and tees to travel gear and toys. The cherry on top is that these goods come from established brands like Levi’s and Giorgio Armani, not some fly-by-night operation.

Another standout feature is the plethora of sales they always have going on, no matter the season. Those 10% to 30% discounts are game-changing, especially since most brands here are bank-breaking. We’re looking at you, Dr. Martens.

As writers, we couldn’t be more thankful for Stefen’s Books, an independent brand recognized for its enormous and fairly priced collection of quality fantasy, horror, science fiction, and comics.

However, the passionate and knowledgeable staff is what truly sets Stefen’s Books apart, in our opinion. Don’t believe us? Walk in and throw any book-related questions, and they’ll gladly respond, particularly if the question is about recommendations.

You won’t want to miss their shoes, too, highlighting nostalgic releases from Nike, Reebok, and Adidas. In addition, they’re not shy about sales; the last time we swung by, there was an impressive 80% off summer wear.

Tourist or not, Australia The Gift is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. The items in the shop beautifully showcase Australia’s identity, from native wildlife to the clever sarcasm that defines its humor.

Unsurprisingly, the koala and kangaroo plush toys lead the sales, along with Australian-made boomerangs and artistic coasters. For us, though, nothing beats the kangaroo bottle openers, inspired by a ballsy part that’s sure to spark conversations.
