A visit here also takes you to the Mataragup mudflats, where the Beeloo people once granted safe passage to other groups across the river. This means the island isn’t just about the flora and fauna. It’s steeped in Nyoongar heritage, too!

Things to Do
Spot the island’s kangaroo crew

There’s no debate here: spotting kangaroos should top your list of things to do on Heirisson Island. Seriously, where else can you see wild kangaroos in the middle of the city?
During our trip, we stumbled upon about 7 kangaroos, which became more active in the late afternoon. We had to exercise a bit of patience, though, since the walk to the kangaroo sanctuary takes about 15 minutes, and the roos are scattered all over the place.
Now for your trip, we suggest sticking to the river trail, as they often chill and feed there. In addition, look for areas where crowds are gathering. That’s usually a telltale sign that kangaroos are around.
Birdwatching
From thalassalfi
Kangaroos aren’t the only stars at Heirisson Island; several bird species also call this place home. In fact, we spotted numerous parakeets, parrots, and fishing birds, with the latter being the most abundant.
On top of that, birdwatchers have reported sightings of maned ducks and rock pigeons, but they’re said to be skittish, so it’s best to maintain some distance if you see some.
But if you’re truly lucky, you might spot Caspian terns, magpies, cormorants, and Australian darters!
Reel in a fishy haul from the river
From danknguyen
Heirisson Island’s wetlands are a hotspot for anglers, as they bream with fish from the Swan River, including mulloway, black bream, and whiting.
With a bit of luck and skill, you could also snag some exotic swimmers like tilapia and redfin perch. We caught a couple by using light tackle and casting near the rock walls and fallen trees.
Just remember to follow the city’s fishing rules and regulations, mainly the size limits for keeping your catch. Also, look out for sharks and dolphins; there’s a chance they’ll pop up in these waters.
Paddle through the calm waters
From edddie76
The Swan River’s tranquil waters are a dream for canoers and kayakers, and one of the best spots to launch is from Heirisson Island.
Paddling north toward the Maylands foreshore is probably the most preferred route. This path leads to Claisebrook Cove and Ascot Waters, and the reward includes glimpses of herons, pelicans, and breathtaking sunset panoramas.
You can also kick off at South Perth’s Coode St and paddle toward the island if you’d rather spot kangaroos.
For those who are kayak-less, renting is a no-brainer. Perth Kayak Hire and Swans on the Swan are your nearest and best options.
Trailblaze through scenic paths and views
From lil_lea_travel
Completing the 4.3-kilometer loop is probably the most sweat-inducing way to explore Heirisson Island. But hey, if you’re a jogger or cyclist, this is a massive win.
The trail is a walk in the park, featuring flat, well-maintained natural pathways with a minimal elevation gain of only 38 meters. Joggers can knock it out in around 54 minutes, while cyclists will breeze through even faster.
No pups are permitted on the trail, though. Also, be prepared for a crowd on weekends; if solitude is your goal, aim for a weekday visit instead.
Have a picnic in the great outdoors

Heirisson Island is undeniably a picnicker’s paradise. The stunning wildlife, vibrant flora, picturesque views, and peaceful ambiance create the perfect setting for a well-deserved break.
Furthermore, the island offers BBQs and picnic tables for your convenience. We recommend dining by the water, though, particularly if you’re into birdwatching or sunset viewing.
