A Complete Guide to Bennion Beach So You Don’t Get FOMO
If you’re living in Perth and still haven’t been to Bennion Beach…are you even trying? That sandy strip along West Coast Drive is easily one of the city’s most complete beaches, with trails, marine life, and picnic shelters galore.
It’s chilling right in Trigg, too. That means you’re guaranteed to catch some waves for flips and enough sunshine for tanning, all without straying far from Perth’s comforts and woofer-friendly zones.
But hey, if you want a proper rundown, like where to spot rare fish, what’s the prime time to pop by, or which joint is worthy of a feast, the guide below is your best mate.

Things to Do
Splash around or surf
From nicolahamilton_swim
Bennion Beach is about as newbie-friendly as they come, thanks to the water’s clarity and abundance of reef. My kids and pups, for instance, rarely get knocked back, with the natural barrier blocking the swells.
That said, things can get real choppy in the arvos. If your kids are still learning, be it the ones with fur or the kind with two legs, morning is your best bet.
As for surfers, we suggest stopping by during winter, specifically in June. That’s when you get blown-out swells and clean waves that are grom and vet-friendly,
Take your dog for a walk or run
From billie.bowie.theaussies
Our dream dog beach is something enclosed, convenient, and absolutely zoomie-approved—this one fits that bill. The limestone rocks on both sides shelter the strip; there are stairs for easy access, and no regulations prevent your pooch from darting.
When to visit depends on your mood. Weekdays are definitely more peaceful (albeit ‘too empty’ sometimes), while weekends often bring numbers good enough to please social butterflies.
The sweet part is that there’s always plenty of rocky outcrops to explore and shells to sniff, so you won’t just be strolling and splashing.
Cruise on a bike
From talithahustonn__
When ambling by the coast feels too sluggish or dull, I take off on my bike. The same mantra applies to Bennion Beach, as well-paved trails run through it, allowing cyclists to capture oceanic or sunset views, minus the sandy bits.
If we’re talking routes, I generally hit the Sunset Coast’s northern path, usually taking off at Brighton or Trigg Beach. Most times, I pedal all the way up to Sorrento Beach, though I also don’t mind halting at Bennion, especially when my joints remind me of my age.
Snorkel or scuba in Mettams Pool

Mettams Pool is just a minute from Bennion Beach, yet it hides a whole new world underneath its mellow and crystalline waters. On top of that, its max depth of two metres means you don’t have to be Valerie Taylor to have a blast.
Season-wise, it peaks between spring and autumn, when there are no winds or cloudy sections to spoil the experience. What experience, you ask? Meeting abalones, herring, and cushion stars along the reef.
The magic even runs deeper for scuba divers who can handle the more open parts of the pool, which range from 5 to 7 metres down. In fact, that’s where our pros do their swim-throughs and western blue devil fish-spotting.

A 2-minute jaunt from Bennion Beach takes you to Clarko Reserve, a seaside, dog-friendly park we typically use for lazy arvos. Basically, it’s our team’s fix to the ‘Bennion Beach is too small for lounging’ dilemma.
Down there, we can flop on the grassy or sheltered areas, while our better cooks whip up some mean chicken or fish BBQ. Sometimes we even score a free yoga or pilates class when the group doing it is around.
The sprogs, meanwhile, spend hours at the sail-shaded playground’s array of monkey bars and slides. Oh, and by ‘hours’ we mean until nightfall—the area is lit until the darker hours.
Where to Eat
Bennies by the Beach

Address: 329/341 W Coast Dr, Trigg
Operating Hours: Daily – 6 am to 8 pm
Pricing: $
Not to sound like a purist, but I roll my eyes whenever a friend goes to Bennion Beach without trying the famed acai bowls of Bennies by the Beach. They’re cheap and aren’t served with last season’s produce. Why miss it?
Take, for instance, my go-to order of nuts, granola, and berries. It just costs $16, which leaves me with enough money to bag my other staple: a hearty avo toast fired up by chilli jam.
Canteen Trigg

If you love smooth espresso, you’ll love it even more at Canteen Trigg. This beachfront cafe brews some pretty good shots worth slowing down for.
Those seafood trays don’t miss either, particularly if you’re with the fam. Plus, wolfing on piles of fresh and naturally oceanic scallops, squid rings, and prawns isn’t bad for 24 bucks.

Island Market Trigg is for foodies who like their contemporary nosh with a side of the Indian Ocean, 200 degrees of it, to be exact.
Most of their plates are seasonal, with a few mainstays I don’t mind indulging on, chiefly the lamb sirloin. Chermoula wraps its incredibly tender meat, resulting in a layered ensemble of gamey, herbaceous, and savoury undertones.

Casual, modern, and sea-facing, North Beach Deli is meant for no-stress brunches. In fact, lots of folks go here for their poached eggs, breakfast tacos, and Darkstar Coffee.
I’m part of that bunch, although I tend to go all out by having eggs Benedict. Their take is classic, loaded with the trimmings I love: buttery hollandaise, creamy poached eggs, salty bacon, you get it.
