A Beach-Bum-Approved Guide to Trigg Beach

If you ask us, you haven’t experienced Perth until you’ve taken on the beefy swells and prime winds of Trigg Beach. A trip on this slice of coast during the sunny-golden or wintry months will prove that.

Mind you, it’s not just the surf, the seabreeze, or the idea of flexing your new sunnies that make this West Coast Drive location a pearler. There are also picnics with that textbook Aussie sunset, feed stops without borders, and more—so much more.

If you want to do it proper, though, try doing it the AvenuePerth way. Our guide was given two sandy thumbs up by our team’s beach bums.

How To Get There

By Bus and Train: Board the Yanchep Line heading toward Stirling Station. At the station, board Bus Line 423 to reach Trigg Beach.

The bus halts at Arnott St right after Karrinyup Rd. There, walk southwest for about 14 mins (900 m), passing straight through Bennion St until you arrive at its intersection with West Coast Dr.

You’re moving in the right direction if you see a public bike park or Clarko Reserve.

By Car: Trigg Beach Car Park is south of Clarko Reserve and north of Island Market Trigg. It’s also just a 2-minute stroll from the beach itself.

By Taxi: Our breakdown below details how to calculate taxi fees in Perth. The hours and fares are updated as of May 2025.

Things to Do

Surfing

From capturingmyserenity

Trigg Beach’s no-fail swell is the reason you’ll likely catch our lot having a yarn with the ocean every other day. Being exposed, it provides surfable waves from both sides, with the west southwest providing the finest swell angle.

The wave height also sits at a comfy 50 to 150 metres most days, which is why it’s not rare to see vets and rookies in the same arvo. That’s also why space is limited, especially in the summer and winter when everyone seems to come down.

Well, good thing it’s surfable on all tides. Just don’t go full cowboy; make sure to gauge your skills, as kissing the rocky bottom is no way to experience this spot.

Swimming

From lah_rah

You won’t catch me saying no to doing laps at Trigg Beach. The turquoise waters alone are worth ditching the warm sand for, and there are always lifeguards keeping an eye out.

Now, you’re probably wondering, ‘What about those waves?’ Fair enough. Fortunately, a reef courses along the beach, so getting smacked by larger waves is unlikely, particularly if you don’t go far from the shore.

Showers and loos are also available, plus you can snorkel at the nearby Mettams Pool to see anemones or shellfish. The real win, though, is spotting bottlenose dolphins during the summer months!

Have a picnic at Clarko Reserve

Every time our fam needs a breather from the waves or too much Vitamin D, we make a beeline to Clarko Reserve.

The grassy park offers covered picnic shelters, with free BBQs ready to be fired up. Best bit? You still get an eyeful of those majestic dunes and water.

Kiddos will have a blast at the sail-shaded playground, too. It’s just the right size for toddlers, but fair warning: you might have to drag them from the flying fox, monkey bars, and slides.

Birdwatching and Fishing

From bybravo

Birdspotting might be a low-key way to enjoy Trigg Beach, but it’s certainly not a snoozefest. On a good day, silver gulls, terns (crested and fairy), and pied cormorants can be seen on or near the rocky outcrops.

Lucky souls could also meet rare visitors, including kestrels or black-shouldered kites. The earlier you pop by, the better chances you have of seeing them.

Might as well cast a line while you wait. Anglers have caught some hefty bream, herring, and blue mackerel along the Sorrento-Trigg stretch.

Conquer the Marmion Marine Path

From helloperth

Length: 36.4 km
Estimated Time: 7 hrs and 30 mins
Difficulty: Moderate
Elevation Gain: 320 m
Type: Out and back

The Marmion Marine Path, open year-round, is a brilliant way to take in Trigg Beach and other nearby wonders…if you have the legs for it. Don’t stress, though, as you can always start or stop wherever your stamina allows.

For us, kicking off at the Trigg Beach car park and going up to Mettams Pool is a smart move. This path is kid-friendly but still has beauties like seabirds and coastal panoramas.

Those built for the entire walk, however, will have more to enjoy, such as swim and snorkel sites like Boyinaboat Reef and Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Take your furball for a walk

From watsonthecairn

Your furry mates can tag along. There’s an enclosed, off-leash area smack dab between Bennion St and Kathleen St.

My pooch loves it there, especially since there’s enough space for a game of tag or seashell sniffing. Additionally, there are other pups to play with.

Parking isn’t the best due to limited space, though. On the upside, access is easy thanks to the stairs, and the stretch becomes prettier come the golden hour.

Kitesurfing

From clarkeeshark

While I don’t kitesurf, a couple of workmates do, and they believe Trigg Beach bangs, as long as you’re an advanced rider.

The wind condition is gusty and shifts directions in a blink. That’s pure adrenaline for pros, but bad news for novices.

If you’re the former, those strong currents are made for long downwind runs and technical moves. Just remember these important rules:

  • Stay 50 m upwind/downwind from flags and 200 m out to sea.
  • Avoid swimmers and surf club training zones.
  • Don’t launch or carry your kite over paths or grass.

Where to Eat

Canteen Trigg

Operating Hours: Daily – 6:30 am to 4:30 pm

Chic and moderately priced, Canteen Trigg is a lovely spot for refuelling.

Fish and chips is our regular feed, and most patrons echo the same sentiment. The meat is delicate and firm, plus the batter rarely breaks, all for $17.

If you have more folks in tow, the $24 seafood basket with scallops and prawns can fill multiple bellies. Just bring cutlery, as they only use wooden cutlery here, which might not be your style.

Island Market Trigg

  • Sun – 8 am to 9 pm

Pricing: $$

Island Market Trigg is a savvy choice if you want fancy modern nosh without giving up those beach views.

Your meal choices depend on your craving or when you visit. During breakfast, $16 poached eggs are typical, while wood-roasted steaks and battered market fish dominate the latter hours.

In our case, the $7 pita does the trick. We love its charred flavour that goes deliciously with their earthy-sweet pumpkin tahini.

Bennies by the Beach

From shannon.creator

Address: 329/341 W Coast Dr, Trigg
Operating Hours:

  • Thu to Fri – 6 am to 12 pm
  • Sat to Sun – 6 am to 1 pm

Pricing: $

The dog-friendly Bennies by the Beach is proof that healthy food doesn’t have to taste bland or cost $20 per serving.

For example, we got acai bowls for just 16 bucks, and they weren’t a light serving. Acai berries, granola, and nuts were all there.

The avo toast was also solid, notably after our long day of swimming and surfing. Its addition of chilli jam was a winner for us.

96 On The Beach is for those who like it laidback. The menu consists of comfort staples, while the view is Trigg Beach through and through.

Our usual pick is the $22 classic burger featuring a Stirling Range beef patty. While it’s pricier than their usual bites, it’s not greasy and large enough for two diners, with plenty of chips on the side.

The $18 fish and chips isn’t shabby either. Its Spanish mackerel is a more pronounced alternative to cod.

Tom’s Italian

Address: 1 N Beach Rd, North Beach

Operating Hours:

  • Mon to Fri – 12 pm to 11 pm
  • Sat to Sun – 9 am to 11 pm

Tom’s Italian is a special family spot for us. While pricier, it has pleasant ocean views for warm moments and food meant for sharing.

We usually start with the $18 arancini. You get four indulgent pieces for that price, each loaded with parmesan and basil pesto.

For the centrepiece, the fam normally goes all out with the $38 lamb potato gnocchi. Generously served and subtly gamey, it’s worth the splurge.
