Pros

  • 50 venues available for music lessons
  • Professional and sincere music teachers
  • Class sizes are kept low

Cons

  • No lessons on weekends
  • Lessons structured mostly for kids

Keyed Up Music is a great piano school for kids thanks to their friendly teachers and amazing class setups. The dedication of this school to instilling musical knowledge in its students has made it a preferred choice among many parents in Perth.

A great highlight of this music school is its impressive 50 locations spread throughout the city. Most suburbs in Perth probably have a Keyed Up Music venue inside their schools.

Aside from their wide reach, this school also employs some of the best music teachers for their lessons. Their teachers received tertiary education related to music from Australian conservatories and universities.

One of their piano teachers is Norberto Flamenco. He’s a graduate of jazz piano at WAAPA, and he’s currently leading a band called vib3 that regularly plays in many festivals and events in Perth.

He’s just one example of the many great teachers that Keyed Up Music has at its disposal.

Aside from their skills, many parents I’ve interviewed told me that the teachers are always friendly and approachable. They are praised for their patience and willingness to wait for kids to learn at their own pace.

When it comes to facilities, Keyed Up Music also manages to deliver. Their class sizes are kept low, and they use high-quality pianos to keep the children focused on the lesson.

The largest class size for their piano lessons is four. However, they also offer one-on-one piano lessons, although the prices are more expensive.

If you’re still worried about the pandemic, then I am happy to report that they also offer online classes. Online lessons are conducted via Zoom, and they’re priced based on the length of each session.

However, a downside to Keyed Up Music is that they don’t offer lessons on weekends. All lessons must be conducted during the weekdays, which means your child will have to attend piano lessons after or before school.

Another downside with them is that their music lessons cater only to young learners. Most of their classes are conducted in schools, which means they don’t really offer piano lessons for adults.

Pros

  • Welcomes any skill level
  • Offers accelerated piano lessons
  • Also offers accompaniment services

Cons

  • Online classes only
  • Lessons structured mostly for adult students

Play Well Piano offers piano lessons to all those interested, no matter their skill level. Their commitment to online classes gives them the flexibility other music schools can’t provide.

This piano school is quite different compared to other music schools in Perth. All their lessons are conducted purely online, and all of their music teachers teach from their homes.

The best thing about Play Well Piano is that they accept students regardless of their skill level. This school can teach someone who’s still a total beginner to someone who’s already well-versed with the instrument.

Play Well Piano offers two types of courses to cater to different learners. One is their Accelerated Piano Program, targeted at beginners to intermediate piano players.

The other is their Advanced Lessons Program, which is more suited to piano players who are at least playing repertoire at AMEB Grade Level 7 or above.

The Accelerated Piano Program is designed to teach the basics to beginners. It’s also used to refresh the memory of intermediate piano players.

The program will then cover the different styles and skills piano players need to get acquainted with the piano in no time.

Meanwhile, the Advanced Lessons Program offers courses that professional piano players can use to improve their skills.

The program also introduces the Taubman Approach. This is for piano players who want to regain their skill after suffering from a playing-related injury.

Furthermore, a unique service that Play Well Piano offers that most other music schools don’t offer is their accompaniment service.

You can get one of their highly experienced teachers to serve as your collaborative pianist for a performance or exam.

However, a downside to Play Well Piano is that their lessons are suitable only for adult piano learners. Their teachers are more adept at teaching their skills to adults than children.

As mentioned before, they are also strictly an online piano lesson school only. Their services may not be compatible with some people who prefer actual face-to-face piano lessons.

Pros

  • Offers lessons to all ages
  • Highly-experienced teachers
  • Uses unique methods to keep engagement high

Cons

  • No online classes available
  • Teaches from one location only

Advantage Music Academy is a music school that caters to a wide range of students. Their school is open to almost all ages and of varying skill levels on different instruments.

The lessons offered are divided according to age groups. An example is that their introductory lessons are for ages 2–4, and then their Head Start lessons are for ages 4–7, and so on.

Advantage Music Academy is currently offering lessons for the guitar, piano, and violin. They also have voice lessons for those who are looking to improve their singing.

I am happy to say that all their teachers are highly experienced professionals. Their teachers have tertiary music education and have 10 years of experience in teaching.

Advantage Music Academy is headed by Steven Armstrong, who has received two university teaching excellence awards from the University of Western Australia. He also has more than 20 years of experience teaching music lessons.

What I really like in particular about this music school is its unique approach to teaching. They employ a reward system for their younger students to incentivise continued engagement.

Moreover, they also host a soiree every 10 months for adult students where they can share their learning experiences. The soiree has free food and liquor to promote a lively atmosphere.

However, a downside to Advantage Music Academy is that its lessons are exclusively available at their school. They currently don’t have online lessons available.

Another downside to them is that they only have one facility where they teach their piano lessons. People who live far from Peppermint Grove might not like the idea of travelling far just to attend their weekly piano lessons.

4. Focus Music

Pros

  • Offers music workshops for schools and local government
  • Qualified and experienced teachers
  • Curriculum tailored to AMEB standards

Cons

  • No classes on Fridays and Sundays
  • Requires a joining fee before you can enrol

Focus Music is committed to delivering quality education to its students. Its highly experienced teachers and great curriculum help it achieve its goal.

Their school is located in Forrestfield, just a few kilometres away from Perth Airport. The facility has high-quality instruments and learning materials available for its students.

Focus Music is composed of a team of highly experienced and qualified teachers. All of them have finished their tertiary education in courses related to music.

They are also well-versed in their instruments. Most of them have been playing their instruments since childhood.

Focus Music is currently offering music lessons for piano, violin, drums, guitar, and trumpet. Their piano lessons have five teachers ready to teach all those who are interested in the instrument, both young and old.

The best thing about Focus Music is that its curriculum follows the standards set by the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Their syllabus ensures that all students learn according to the national standard.

As a result, their students have a high passing rate on exams conducted by the AMEB.

If you can’t attend their facility, then you don’t need to worry because they offer live online classes. These classes are held on Zoom, and students can engage in one-on-one piano lessons with their teachers.

Focus Music is offering a cheap 30-minute trial session for those interested in their music lessons. I actually tried this one, and I really love Justin’s eagerness to teach me everything he can about the piano during the trial session.

Despite their awesome teachers and lessons, there are still a few downsides to Focus Music. One is that they don’t offer lessons on Fridays and Sundays.

I also think that the $50 they ask for as their joining fee is totally unnecessary. The fee can turn some people off, and they may decide to look somewhere else.

5. Forte School of Music

Pros

  • Multiple schools available in Perth
  • Has their own app for enhanced learning
  • Affordable prices

Cons

  • Each school has their own teaching schedule
  • No online classes offered

Forte School of Music is one of the biggest music schools in Perth. Their schools are available in most major Australian cities and even in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

In Perth, their schools can be found in the towns of Canning Vale, Applecross, Joondalup, and Success.

Forte School of Music offers a wide variety of instruments for their classes. Aside from piano, they also teach guitar, clarinet, drums, ukulele, and more.

Their lessons are available to children, teens, and adults.

Their size has allowed them to develop ways to enhance their methods of teaching musical instruments to their students. One of their innovations to enhance learning among their students is their Forte Practice Buddy app.

The app provides easy access to the learning materials provided by the school. Through this app, students can still continue learning the piano even without an instructor present.

Forte Practice Buddy app can be downloaded on common household gadgets today like iPads and smartphones.

The best thing about Forte School of Music is its affordability. Most of their lessons are accessible and cheap enough for many people.

They are currently offering summer music lessons that are really affordable. A 90-minute lesson only costs you AUD 40.

However, a downside to Forte School of Music is that the schedules of their schools may greatly vary from each other. Because they operate on a franchise model, the schools have different owners who may choose what time they want to start classes.

It’s also quite disappointing that they don’t offer online classes for their piano lessons. Aside from their app, there’s no way for the student to learn aside from visiting the schools for their lessons.
