Top 5 Private Schools in Perth

How We Picked Trusted Perth Private Schools

Reputation

It’s important for your child to go to a school with a good reputation. For this criterion, we checked the school’s background as well as its alumni.

Quality of education

The quality of education is judged by the credibility of the teachers, how they handle and work with students, and the curricula.

Facilities

The overall environment of the school plays a huge role when it comes to the students’ comfort and learning experience.

Student life

The school may check all the boxes to be one of the best schools, but it’s also important for the students to feel safe and nurtured as they learn.

Parent-teacher relations

It’s normal for children to encounter some struggles with school, and it’s important that parents have communication lines with their children’s teachers.

Pros

  • Great teachers
  • Spacious campus
  • Multiple options for cocurricular activities
  • High standard of education
  • Offers multiple scholarships

Cons

  • Still mostly a boys’ school
  • Bullying issues

Wesley College is one of the most popular independent schools in Western Australia. They’re both a day and a boarding school, and you’re free to choose whether you want your child to board for the school year.

Wesley is nearing its 100th anniversary since its founding, and in these 100 years, they’ve built a culture around the school. Despite being coed from pre-K until Year 6, the school predominantly has a boys’ culture.

Thus, Wesley may not be the best choice if you have a daughter who will be matriculating in the higher year levels, as bullying can be a common occurrence in this school due to power dynamics.

Despite the school having a dedicated program to student well-being and pastoral care, some former students have claimed that the school barely did anything when they had instances of bullying during their time.

However, as these were feedback from alumni, it is possible that the school has now improved on their responses to situations like these, as they have assigned roles to teachers to monitor the well-being of students at each year level.

The obvious edge Wesley has over any other private school is its high standard for education and the facilities they have available.

Students from Years 3 to 12 are provided with a school laptop, and they have multiple cocurricular activities for arts and sports. Sports participation is mandatory for each student, whereas musical education is an additional tuition program.

Pros

  • Dedicated teachers
  • Teachers cooperate with parents
  • Multiple cocurricular activities
  • Nonselective school
  • Offers multiple scholarships

Cons

  • No day school
  • Higher standards for international students

St Hilda’s Anglican School for Girls is one of the oldest schools in Australia, having been founded in the year 1896. From its inception, St Hilda’s has remained an all-girls school, with the exception of boys in their Early Learning Centre.

What we appreciate most about them is that they’re a nonselective school and their student body boasts of a diverse set of students coming from different ethnicities and indigenous groups.

They also offer multiple scholarships, but if your child will be an international student, they will have higher standards to meet regarding English proficiency. In this case, they can rescind admission to your child if they think they don’t meet the standards.

Parents also commended how easy it was to speak with school officials or their child’s teacher, which assured them of their child’s safety, especially since St Hilda’s is only a boarding school for the higher levels.

You may prefer your child to go to a day school, but many parents can vouch for the safety and well-being of their children who they sent to St Hilda’s and boarded there.

They have a rigorous academic program, but with multiple cocurricular options in sport, music, dance, and drama, and with a Dean of Student Well-being, we are confident that the school genuinely cares for your child’s growth and well-being.

Pros

  • Good academic program
  • Great facilities
  • Tailored programs for each year level
  • Partnered with The Resilience Project

Cons

  • Instances of bullying
  • Some reports of students having vices

Trinity College boasts a beautiful campus that sits on the banks of the Swan River. It moved from its original location to its current location in East Perth, and the college makes a concerted effort to ensure its facilities enhance student life.

The grounds are large enough for students to enjoy outdoor sports, and the proximity to the Swan River allows students the opportunity to try rowing. Additionally, they also have an indoor sports centre.

They have several laboratories such as the virtual reality lab and laboratories for STEM subjects, and you can be confident that the college will provide its students with the latest technology to supplement their education.

Trinity College prides itself on offering education tailored to boys, but unfortunately, there is only so much they have under their control.

Alumni have reported that the student environment is no longer as healthy as it was when they first matriculated, claiming that bullying is rampant with the school struggling to keep it under control.

There were also some reports that multiple cliques in the higher levels have developed vices like vaping, which we understand will be a concern to most parents.

However, we still think that Trinity College is a good school, but it may be best to request a tour and observe student life before choosing to enrol your son here.

Pros

  • Diverse student body
  • Great teachers
  • Good reports of students’ happiness
  • Multiple cocurricular activities
  • Fully coed

Cons

  • Strict uniform policy
  • Minor complaints on some teachers

All Saints’ College is one of the few fully coed schools for all year levels, which is a plus in our opinion, as children being exposed to different genders from an early age can help them with social interaction and tolerance as they grow older.

The school’s core values are empathy, respect, integrity, and courage, or ERIC for short. These values are incorporated into their programs, and students are encouraged to abide by these values.

We are pleased to report that the satisfaction levels for both parents and students are high for All Saints’ College.

The parents we’ve spoken to appreciate the level of dedication the teachers have towards their students, and they reported that their children are happy to be enrolled in the school.

Other than the school’s core values, we think their diverse student body also helps in student happiness, as they learn more about and experience different cultures.

They also have multiple before and after-school cocurricular activities for your child to choose from.

One common complaint we did hear about was regarding the school’s strict uniform policy, which some found excessive, although this might be a way for the school to teach discipline.

There were also some minor complaints about the demeanour of teachers, but fortunately, the school officials were willing to speak with the parents regarding these issues.

5. Carmel School

Pros

  • Offers fee assistance
  • No enrolment fee
  • Has Hebrew and Jewish studies
  • Meat-free and Kosher policy

Cons

  • Small student body may limit student exposure
  • Relatively few facilities

Carmel School is one of the few Jewish schools in the country and in fact is the only Jewish day school in Western Australia. This is important, as we know that most private schools in the country follow the Christian faith and its denominations.

Despite being a Jewish school, Carmel School also offers secular education for students and accepts students coming from different faiths. However, their curriculum and programs are specifically tailored for Jewish students.

They have Hebrew and Jewish studies to allow their students to learn more about their faith.

We also appreciate how dedicated they are in their goal to provide all Jewish children with a Carmel education and thus don’t charge an enrolment fee. You will still have to pay for tuition, but they also offer fee assistance for families who need it.

They have a small student body with a population of just over 500, and while this means smaller class sizes—which give teachers a greater opportunity to focus on their students—it may limit your child’s exposure to different cultures.

Their school grounds aren’t as large as other schools on this list, and they have fewer facilities, but they do have enough recreation areas and laboratories for their student population.

If you’re hesitant about whether this is the right school for your child, you can book a tour of their campus and explore the grounds yourself.
