You won’t fight for sandy space with this guide to Floreat Beach!

I know we’re all tired of beaches jammed with ‘beach bums’ yelling at each other like it’s an AFL finals watch party. Lucky for me, I found out about the underrated Floreat Beach.

There, I didn’t elbow my way through a crowd for the Indian Ocean or a towel space…unlike most of Perth’s more popular tourist magnets.

That’s not to say it’s dead dull; there’s actually plenty to do, like chasing waves or giving Kerri Pottharst a run for her money. If you want the full scoop, I’ll share the details below.

How to Get There

By Bus: From the Perth CBD, you’ll reach Floreat Beach by catching bus lines 81, 82, or 83. Get off once it halts at Templetonia Cr before Dampier Ave, follow Dampier Ave, and cross W Coast Hwy to arrive at the car park, a short walk from the beach.

By Train: Getting to Floreat Beach from downtown Perth starts with boarding the Yanchep Line, which stops at Leederville. Once there, take a 5-min walk to Cambridge St after Southport St, where you must jump onto bus line 82.

The bus will stop at Templetonia Cr before Dampier Av, where you just need to follow the route above.

By Car: The nearest car parks to the beach are Town of Cambridge – Car Park C311 and C310. On the rare occasion that those two are packed, Car Park C308 is the closest alternative.

Things to Do

Go for a splash or catch some waves

From saltdiaries

Swimmers flock to Floreat Beach because there’s rarely a ripple, a crowd to bump shoulders with, and a wrapper on the sand. That’s especially true if you compare it with popular alternatives like City Beach, a few hops away.

Having regular lifeguards keeping an eye out makes it more attractive to families, no matter the season. However, I suggest visiting before lunchtime, when the breeze is tamer.

Surfing-wise, it has consistent swells, but waves tend to chill and be flat in summer.

Take a wander through the Reabold Hill Summit Boardwalk

From brausnmore

Length: 1.9 km
Estimated Time: 33 mins
Elevation Gain: 61 m
Difficulty: Easy
Type: One-way

Swan Coastal Plain’s highest natural point greeted us at the 200-m Reabold Hill Summit Boardwalk. Up there, the metro’s most picturesque bits were in one frame, including the Indian Ocean and Darling Scarp.

Birdlife, over 80 species of the bunch, also lives in the bush crossed by the trail. Lizards, amphibians, and a few mammals like brushtail possums could be encountered, too.

Now, where to start depends on you. Most kick off at the nearby Tuart Park, but we always leg it down first at the Floreat Beach Nature Walk, where we get our coastline fix without getting sand in our kicks.

Serve, smash, and spike at the volleyball court

From thekioskfloreatbeach

If you see a crew going full tilt on Floreat Beach’s sand, chances are, that’s us out for a volley bash.

Last time we hired the fenced and netted court, it cost us $31 an hour, which isn’t bad if every player chips in—if.

Of course, you can use it without paying a single buck, but those who booked or paid online will be given priority. A ‘first come, first served’ basis is always in effect as well.

Watch your kids play at Floreat Beach Play Space

From thekioskfloreatbeach

Address: Unnamed Road, City Beach

‘Ever seen a kraken-themed playground?’ was probably the question local leaders asked before giving Floreat Beach Play Space a cephalopod-inspired makeover. Spoiler: they nailed it.

The legendary monster is now the space’s highlight. Instead of breaking ships, though, it acts as a climbing, sliding, and hiding structure for kiddos.

A couple of other playground attractions surround it, some swings and rope obstacles. There’s also a wooden boat, which the imaginative tots love captaining.

Take the pup for a walk at Floreat Dog Beach (Peasholm Dog Beach)

From sarahmillerbassett

Early mornings at Floreat Dog Beach will put you and your furry pal in a great mood. The waves are gentler, and there are washing facilities for both pups and hoomans, so dips aren’t off the itinerary.

If you have a runner, those dunes will give them plenty of space for some zoomies. Things even get livelier at the off-leash northern section!

Extra perks like free floodlit parking and drinking fountains are also included. On the downside, you must be wary of puffer fish and the afternoon crowd.

Feast on the grass or play footie at City Beach Oval

Tossing a mat at City Beach Oval just might be the break your mind and body need. BBQ use doesn’t cost a dime there, and you can pour some vino while people-watching or catching the golden hour.

For the go-go types, you can burn those picnic sandwiches on the field. Cricket pitches and footy goals are found throughout the oval.

On top of that, kids can run wild on the nature-based playground. Ours certainly had a blast on those mirrored slides and stepping logs!

Drop a bait at Floreat Drain

Operating Hours: Daily – 24 hours

We tried our luck at Floreat Drain, and as promised by the local anglers, casting a line there paid off. A handful of herring and whiting filled our buckets.

When we dropped in earlier the next day, our luck was better, with squid and a few prawns adding to our catches.

Late evenings also brought up some fish, especially tailor. That said, it can get crowded around that time; best be an early bird.

I’ve been loyal to Kiosk since 2008, and I doubt that’ll change. An open-air cafe with brekkie, lunch, and dinner fare by the Indian Ocean? Yeah, that’s a recipe for success.

If you ask me, though, it’s their chicken burger with avo that bangs hard. The smoky side doesn’t overwhelm the savoury meat, and the chipotle sauce imparts some welcome fire and sweetness.

My go-to pair for it is a cocktail, either a citrusy mimosa with prosecco or a tart pineapple daiquiri featuring plantation rum as a base.

Payday calls for a meal at Hamptons. You get sophisticated bar grub by the Indian Ocean, plus a private drinking lounge called ‘The Bubbles’ if you’re especially minted.

Talking food, their pork belly has broken my diet many times. The salsa verde and cauliflower puree infuse the meat with a bright and earthy side that’s too delish to skip.

Sometimes, I get the crispy skin barramundi, another banger. Oceanic sweetness runs through it, with some spice borrowed from Malay curry.

Clancy’s Fish Bar

I can’t chinwag about Floreat Beach and exclude Clancy’s Fish Bar.

Anybody who has ever had their fish and chips will get me. The exterior is often crisp, the meat is moist, and the portions are generous enough for sharing.

Those Kinkawooka chilli mussels have given me a new obsession, too. The mussels already have a distinctly sweet profile, but the sour tomatoes and aromatic basil sauce take the flavours up a notch.

Panoramic and easygoing, Voyage Kitchen is meant for group catch-ups. You also won’t be short on choices here, with local and international brekkie-to-dinner options.

In terms of all-time faves, Shark Bay spaghetti is definitely part of that list, thanks to prawns and crabs bringing ocean-kissed flavours. You can wash that with an espresso martini or freshly-squeezed juices.

If you pop by earlier, it’s a toss-up between the homemade banana bread and classic eggs Benedict, best downed with coffee or smoothies.
